Web Survey Bibliography
We examined the effects of the mode of gratification (bonus points, sweepstake, report of results), the purpose of the study (scientific versus commercial) and the number of reminders on the return rate in online panels. 68 online surveys which were conducted in four different online panels during the years 2000 to 2004 were analyzed. The overall return rate was 71.9 percent (N = 57.598; 73.5 percent when weighting for sample-size). Bonus points and the number of reminders increased the return rate significantly. We found only a weak effect of the investigation purpose on the return rate. Unexpectedly, the announcement of a report with study results reduced the return rate. The findings are discussed with regard to their generalizability and further research questions.
